The vet\u2019s prognosis is \u201cdays to weeks,\u201d and when even *I* can seen the lump on her jaw growing day by day \u2026 that\u2019s not great.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Naturally, I\u2019m on the road this week, leaving to deal with the not eating, the bleeding gums, the blood stains on the feet (from cleaning herself), and the general weirdness. We\u2019ve gotten pain-control patches for the duration, but we need to shave a new patch on her to apply one every three days. She\u2019s looking a little patchy. At \u201cdays to weeks,\u201d I don\u2019t give a damn about addiction or long-term side effects. I\u2019m looking for \u201ccomfortable\u201d and \u201cnarced out of her mind\u201d if at all possible. Little feet kneading the air when we brush her is totally appropriate. Purring and sitting on my lap while we watch the afternoon progress is fine with me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, as <a href=\"http:\/\/justkidding_nr.livejournal.com\/\">justkidding_nr<\/a> said: \u201cYou get to say goodbye, don\u2019t discount that.\u201d So yes. We\u2019re going through an abbreviated process of grieving and saying goodbye. She\u2019s been a good kitty \u2013 with us through six residences now \u2026 and she\u2019s still able to get up on top of the piano (where cats are not allowed) just to show us who\u2019s boss. It could easily have been (like saw on the first visit) \u201cwe had to put your dog down.\u201d Let\u2019s hear it for small graces.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So there you go. I\u2019m in a Residence Inn somewhere in Maryland, and is at home with the cat. I\u2019m canceling trips for next week because \u2013 well \u2013 because it\u2019s what I think I need to do. That\u2019s what they always say, right? Do what you need to do?
