{"id":1647,"date":"2010-06-08T00:30:54","date_gmt":"2010-06-08T04:30:54","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dwan.org\/?p=1647"},"modified":"2020-04-08T06:57:48","modified_gmt":"2020-04-08T10:57:48","slug":"art-weekend","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dwan.org\/index.php\/2010\/06\/08\/art-weekend\/","title":{"rendered":"Art Weekend"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/snc-institute.org\/mediawiki\/images\/thumb\/e\/e8\/P5300003.jpg\/450px-P5300003.jpg\" ismap=\"ismap\" width=\"300\">Indulged, this past weekend, in the now four year old tradition of renting a cabin in the woods with a dozen or so friends. The stated purpose of the weekend is to work on the arts and crafts projects that we push to the side on any particular day in our \u201creal\u201d lives. The subtitle might be \u201cif we\u2019re so successful, why don\u2019t we live more like this?\u201d It was invigorating and wonderful.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The structure is minimal \u2013 people respect each other\u2019s space \u2013 but at the same time revel in being physically close to friends. Each morning, someone offers breakfast (crepes one day, omelets the next). It\u2019s small enough to be a comfortable mix of socialist sharing with boundaries. Folks settle in and work quietly (with occasional bursts of laughter) through to the mid afternoon. At some point, the first beer of the day gets cracked \u2013 and conversation begins to spread. Eventually, people set aside their projects and jump in the pool \u2013 or pick up musical instruments. Each evening has a more structured dinner \u2013 this year mine was on Sunday. With and , I cooked a risotto, broiled fish, and kale. This had the dual purpose of emptying the winter larders of frozen fish and kale in preparation for the onslaught of this year\u2019s CSA. Five pounds of fish per week doesn\u2019t sound like a lot for two families, but you can\u2019t let yourself fall behind.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There are three of us who homebrew \u2013 we had four varieties of beer, one mead, and my wine. This year saw first homemade keg of art weekend \u2013 and it is whispered that I might try distillation next year. In preparation for that, I made a 24 hour, 15% alcohol solution using \u201cTurbo\u201d yeast. \u201cTurbo,\u201d apparently involves discarding all niceties of flavor and just going balls-out. It was foul, and we dumped it out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The talents my friends bring are amazing. My small offering was a bit of Japanese brush work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So ask yourself \u2013 if you can imagine a better life than the one you live now \u2013 what are you doing to make that more than a dream?
