One of them was two (and a half!). The adults, of course, were very fun to have over. I want to talk about the little girl.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She spent dinner sacked out on the couch. Sound asleep, being occasionally investigated by the cats.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After dinner, the adults had settled in the front room with our tea, and the girl woke up. She was contentedly wandering around, looking at things, and she saw the smaller cat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cCAT!\u201d (pointing)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The cat froze in horror, then sprinted for the door. Cats (even ones with naturally bobbed tails) apparently have an instinctive horror of children.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To which we\u2019re like \u201cvery good! That\u2019s a cat. Her name is \u2018Minnow.'\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cMee-know?\u201d (wandering after the cat, voice echoing through house): \u201cMee-know? MEE-KNOW?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In short order, the little girl was back, at my knee. \u201cUncle? Cat.\u201d Very serious.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I was like, \u201csometimes cats hide. Did you look for her?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cCat. Mee-know, uncle.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cShe likes this toy,\u201d (hand her the cat toy), \u201ccan you find her?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Shakes head. Points the toy at me. \u201cCat. Uncle. Cat.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So I spent the next hour or so wandering around my house with a two year old, looking for the cat \u2013 while the grown ups talked about boring stuff. One high point was when we were on our bellies, looking at Minnow who was under the farthest corner of the sofa. Each of us had a toy, hers was a little stuffed mousie. Again, very serious.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cmouse.\u201d (yes). \u201ccat\u201d. (yes).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Long pause.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201canimals.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I sorta dig this kid.
