Cashed some <a href=\"http:\/\/marriott.com\/\">Marriott<\/a> points for a stay in a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.marriott.com\/hotels\/travel\/nycbr-renaissance-new-york-hotel-57\/\">damn nice hotel<\/a>. Took the <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Acela_Express\">Acela<\/a> down on Wed, and the <a href=\"http:\/\/limoliner.com\">limoliner<\/a> (bus) back on Friday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In between, we walked our butts off. Saw the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.radiocitychristmas.com\/\">Rockettes<\/a>, which was straight from the 30\u2019s: \u201cGirls in a line, kicking their legs up in the air.\u201d Good times, but I had to suspend my thoroughly modern sensibilities \u2013 since I\u2019m sure that whole feminist tracts could be (and have been) written about it. Saw the decorated window displays for the major stores \u2013 and the tree in Rockefeller center. It turns out that I totally have a thing for \u201cempire\u201d period architecture \u2013 of which Rockefeller Plaza is the stone-cold exemplar. Who knew? It\u2019s the long vertical lines, and the belief in the triumph of humanity and knowledge over the forces of chaos, I think.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We also had <a href=\"http:\/\/ess-a-bagel.com\/\">lox on a bagel<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/pickleguys.com\">Pickles<\/a>, some <a href=\"http:\/\/xocafenyc.com\/\">authentic chinatown fare<\/a>, and so on.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Today was a low key day of exchanging gifts, and then going to see Tron in 3d. My assessment is that Tron Legacy makes a great music video for Daft Punk \u2013 and it was a fine action movie. The fight scenes are good, and both the beefcake and the cheesecake are on full display. Great art, it ain\u2019t \u2026 but I didn\u2019t really go into it looking for great art \u2013 so all is well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Check out <a href=\"http:\/\/krugman.blogs.nytimes.com\/2010\/12\/25\/crossing-over\/\">Paul Krugman\u2019s latest blog post<\/a> for a decent holiday message. In fact, I\u2019ll excerpt:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><code>Nothing lasts forever, and there are times when I listen to the demagogues and fanatics, and fear that America as we know it is slipping away. But there is a basic decency to this nation. And in the end, I believe and hope, that decency will continue to prevail.<\/code><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I find myself filled with a calm and abiding optimism today. I hope that it continues tomorrow.
