{"id":1247,"date":"2008-03-18T07:39:16","date_gmt":"2008-03-18T11:39:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dwan.org\/?p=1247"},"modified":"2019-10-27T07:40:19","modified_gmt":"2019-10-27T11:40:19","slug":"fight-club","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dwan.org\/index.php\/2008\/03\/18\/fight-club\/","title":{"rendered":"Fight Club"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>I picked up <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">A Fighter\u2019s Heart<\/span> by Sam Sheridan at the airport on the way back from VA. I\u2019m nearly through it already, a quick and easy read.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sheridan has fought in several different styles over the last decade or so. He attaches himself to an intensive gym in Muay Thai, MMA, Jiu-Jitsu, Boxing, or whatever \u2026 trains for three to six months \u2026 and then tries to convince his trainer to find him a money fight at the appropriate level. He funds this habit by writing for the Men\u2019s Journal, Sports Illustrated, and so on. It\u2019s sort of a one-man <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Human Weapon.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I like his writing style, as well as his stated reasons for stepping into the ring again and again. A few of his off-the-cuff comments are totally dead on with my experiences to date. One that I keep coming back to is his description of grappling, the \u201cground game:\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>There is nothing so frightening as being on the ground with a guy who really knows what he\u2019s doing; it\u2019s like being in the water with a shark. You\u2019re struggling, desperate, trying to escape, and suddenly you can\u2019t breathe, you\u2019re smothered, and you can\u2019t see, your arms are getting twisted off, and you \u201ctap\u201d and then it\u2019s all over.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That, broadly speaking, has been my experience rolling with any of the skilled guys at the judo school.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I picked up A Fighter\u2019s Heart by Sam Sheridan at the airport on the way back from VA.
