{"id":1178,"date":"2010-01-25T20:42:41","date_gmt":"2010-01-26T01:42:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dwan.org\/?p=1178"},"modified":"2019-10-26T20:44:02","modified_gmt":"2019-10-27T00:44:02","slug":"publication","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dwan.org\/index.php\/2010\/01\/25\/publication\/","title":{"rendered":"Publication"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>A positive post, not about Haiti.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One of the groups with whom I work just <a href=\"http:\/\/genomebiology.com\/2010\/11\/1\/R1\">published a paper<\/a>. It&#8217;s interesting in that it may be the first paper to describe the whole genome sequencing and analysis of an entire genus. Maybe. Or not. I can&#8217;t keep up with big science anymore. It&#8217;s the genus that includes plague.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Anyway, I helped out with this at the very end of the process &#8211; when a reviewer pointed out (correctly) that a couple of the strains in the paper were not yet in the public repositories. I.e: The data wasn&#8217;t *actually* available to the public yet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We went digging, the lead author and I, and finally located the files based on what can be best described as &#8220;the dog shit connection.&#8221; He noted that this strain had been isolated from dog feces, in Germany, in the 70s. I ran a search in the wiki on &#8220;feces,&#8221; and there was the data. The rest is history.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Lest you think I&#8217;m making this up &#8211; here&#8217;s a table from the publication.
