My very favorite engagements over the last several years have been long-term partnerships with large organizations to develop technology architectures and data strategies. In these relationships I have tended to acted as more of a team member than an external consultant, often taking on a specific role within the organization and adopting a steady schedule of onsite presence.
There is a lot of satisfaction to this sort of work, since I can bring the full spectrum of my skills to bear. At the same time, I tend to be cautious with these large commitments. They run the risk of pulling me into the day-to-day minutia of an organization – which can diffuse the impact of my outsider’s perspective. It’s always a balance.
As I said above, these are my favorite engagements. Please do not hesitate to reach out if you need a long-term partner to help with building something big.
